Dear Pennies,
Today, I wanted to discuss the personal style of Solange Knowles. From her name, you already know who she’s related to so, I’m not even gonna go there. The subject is old and tired. Like really. And if you ask me, Solange was never in her sister’s shadow. Solange has been doing her own thing for forever. Don’t believe me? Listen to the Proud Family theme song, and you’ll hear Solange. Watch the Bow Wow “Puppy Love” video, and you’ll see Solange. All these things occured in the early 2000s, prior to big sis being a household name.
So what the heck is everyone talking about? Solange has her own life separate from anyone else’s. She does her own thing all the time. Every picture you look at of Solange over the years, you can see that she has her own sense of style. From the bright red micros, to the golden brown locks she rocked in Bring It On, to the long black wavy hair from her last album, to the Afro she’s currently sporting, Solange has always been a style icon. I don’t say that because I always love what she wears, because I don’t, I say that because it’s always her and it’s always unique.
Two years ago, Solange dropped her second album, “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams.” This album is pure dopeness and if you haven’t heard it or don’t like it, your life must be pretty empty. This album adds soul, rock, love, and thoughts to your life. Again, if you’re not blasting it, you gets a *side eye* from me. Anywho, Solange’s style was all over this album. She rocked everything from the french roll on top with hair down in the back and a side bang (very 1960s), there was an awesome pink dress with ruffles in front, and then there was a glitter sequin pink outfit, an afro, and platform heels…this was all in the “I Decided” video and only two scenes from that.
Then there was the album’s cover art. Solange in a yellow dress with red wings, standing in the midst of a rainbow, and in the background there seems to be a bunch of trash but if you take a closer look, it’s records and various record players. The girl gives you art, fashion, and music before you even open the album.
Most recently, Solange lit up the blogosphere with her attendance at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. She was featured on seemingly every fashion/style blog and the photos were nothing short of fabulous. However, I wanted to take it back and get people to see that the younger Knowles has always done her own thing. It just took the world longer to notice it and give props where props are due. I know I’ve been a fan of Solange for a long time and I never thought she was in her sister’s shadow. You can’t be a shadow if you look totally different (all the time) from your sister and always have.
And there it is. The Fashion and Style of the Pen…de la Pen.

solanges music was really slept on, better than Beys but I really do think she was trying extra hard not to be in her sister’s shadow..it’s got annoying and she did to with her slick mouth.
